L’origine de cet animal légendaire unicorne fait débat. L’observation d’animaux tels que l’antilope ou le rhinocéros (🦏) aurait pu contribuer à la naissance du mythe.

Les premières représentations attestées d’animaux à corne unique, retrouvées dans l’Ouest du sous-continent indien, datent de la civilisation de la vallée de l’Indus (3200-1900 av. J.-C).
